After a two-year hiatus, The Mandalorian is finally back with new episodes. Season 3 kicks off with plenty of action and lots of different locations. The world of The Mandalorian has grown. Representative of this is a scene in which Din Djarin and Grogu fly through hyperspace.

The Mandalorian Season 3 Episode 1 surprises with space whales in hyperspace

We’ve seen quite a few hyperspace scenes in the Star Wars universe. Bright beams of light sweep past us as the characters move through space at top speed. The Mandalorian fits into that exciting detail added: When Grogu looks out the window, he sees gigantic silhouettes.

Purrgils in The Mandalorian

These silhouettes belong to space whales, the so-called purrgils. The Purrgils are from the Star Wars Rebels animated series and make their live-action debut in Season 3 of The Mandalorian. The bluish-purple creatures can fly through hyperspace by inhaling Clouzon-36 gas.

Although the moment in The Mandalorian goes uncommented, these whales could still become very important in the future. They are connected to two missing characters: Ezra Bridger and Grand Admiral Thrawn. At the end of Star Wars Rebels, the young Jedi was able to defeat the villain with the help of the Purrgils.

Ezra and Thrawn are among the central characters of Star Wars Rebels. While Ezra is a ray of hope for the Jedi legacy after their annihilation, it is originally from the Expanded Universe originating Thrawn as a dangerous opponent. He’s a brilliant tactician who brings trouble to the Rebellion.

Since the end of Rebels, however, it has been unclear where exactly the two characters are. In The Mandalorian Season 2, Ahsoka Tano reveals that she is on a quest to find Thrawn. The Purrgils are the next clear clue for the return of Ezra and Thrawn. The only question is when exactly this will take place.

Theoretically, it would be possible for series creator Jon Favreau to use the new episodes of The Mandalorian to integrate the two like Boba Fett and Co. into the Mando cosmos. Favreau could do one with that similar goosebump moment create like the Luke Skywalker reveal at the end of The Mandalorian season 2.

It’s more likely that the new season of Mando will just lay the groundwork before Ezra and Thrawn appear in the Ahsoka series, which is due to launch on Disney+ later this year. Based on the information so far, this is not only closely linked to The Mandalorian, but should Pick up many Star Wars Rebels elements.

Ezra’s casting has already been decided. After the character was voiced by Taylor Gray in Star Wars Rebels, the relatively unknown Eman Esfandi (King Richard) awakens the Live action version brought to life. Who plays Thrawn, however, is still a mystery. Many fans want Lars Mikkelsen to play the role, having already lent his voice to the character in Star Wars Rebels.

The 3rd season of The Mandalorian has been running since March 1, 2023 at Disney+.
