WHO from Gaza: “The al-Shifa hospital is in ruins”

In collaboration with several UN agencies, the World Health Organization (WHO) has visited what remains of the Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza, to assess, among other things, the possibilities for future reconstruction, according to a press release.

“There are no patients left. Most of the buildings either have extensive damage or are completely destroyed and the majority of the equipment is unusable or charred,” it writes.

War between Israel and Hamas

  • – Here and there you see bodies lying rotting under the sand of Gaza, it’s unimaginably horrible, says Ayadil Saparbekov, WHO envoy.

    Only 10 hospitals left

The WHO team on the ground states that the devastation is so great that the hospital is completely unusable and that it is unlikely to be able to restore basic medical capacity except in the long term.

“Of the 36 main hospitals that cared for more than 2 million Gazans, only 10 are reasonably functional, even those with serious limitations on the care they can provide,” WHO writes about the situation in Gaza.

    Patients killed during the raid

Israel claims Hamas had regrouped at the hospital and says it has killed 200 alleged terrorists in the raid.

The information has not been verified by any independent party, and the authorities in Hamas-ruled Gaza in turn believe that around 400 people were killed by the Israeli forces.

At least 20 patients died during the raid, according to the WHO.
