Webuild new milestone for a dam project in Tajikistan

(Finance) – Webuild has reached a milestone relevant to the Rogun Hydroelectric Project, Tajikistan, with the launch of the concrete casting for the construction of the dam. The Rogun HPP Hydropower Plant Project is an impressive work that it will double the energy potential of Tajikistan, through the generation of clean and renewable energy, helping to support the country’s sustainable development process. Pietro Salini, CEO of Webuild, joined the President of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon, to celebrate the milestone.

Located upstream of the Vakhsh River, in the Pamir Mountains, west of the Himalayas, with its 335 meters high and 1,300 meters above sea level, the Rogun Plant will be the highest dam in the world, beating the record of the Nurek dam, also in Tajikistan.

The works were commissioned by the OJSC Rogun Hydropower Plant and Webuild is responsible for the construction of the main civil works necessary for the construction of the rockfill dam with a clay core.

Located about 90 kilometers from Dushanbe, the capital, the plant is part of a larger project, which includes further lots relating to tunneling works and the construction of the power plant and electromechanical works. For the realization of the Webuild lot alone, about 2,000 people are involved, direct and third parties, most of whom are local.

To date, two of the six turbines that will make up the plant have already been activated, Unit 5 and Unit 6, each with a potential capacity of 600MW. The start-up of the plant in functional phases has allowed Tajikistan to meet the growing demand for energy recorded in particular during the winter months and to export part of the energy produced in neighboring countries. When all six turbines of 600MW each are active and the project is completed, the Rogun Plant it will be one of the most powerful hydroelectric plants in Central Asiawith an installed power of 3,600MW, the equivalent of 3 nuclear reactors.
