Work is underway on the LO Stonehouse walking bridge construction project in Wallaceburg, with completion expected in mid-July, Chatham-Kent officials say.

The Sydenham River is expected to remain open and passable at all times during construction, a release said.

The contractor is co-ordinating work to keep the construction area open to river traffic at all times during the navigation season, starting May 15, in accordance with Transport Canada approvals.
The contractor began preparing the site last month and will remove the remaining spans of the existing bridge next week.
Work continues on shop drawings and material fabrication off-site in preparation for installations, set to begin in May. Work is expected to be completed ahead of WAMBO this summer.
“The LO Stonehouse walking bridge in . . . Wallaceburg serves as one of the main pedestrian crossings over the Sydenham River,” engineering director Marissa Mascaro said in the release.
“Our project team is working hard to get this important project completed and we look forward to the community’s excitement when the pedestrian bridge reopens.”
The project will see colored lighting, like that on Chatham’s Third Street bridge, installed starting this spring. But the multi-step process of commissioning the lighting system will see work continue through the summer, aiming for activation in early fall.
