News of the sausage-based sales record was posted on Volkswagen’s intranet earlier this month, reports German newspaper Bild.
The sausage in question is a classic currywurst made at the main factory in Wolfsburg, which Volkswagen has been serving in its canteens since 1973.

The sausages are emblazoned with the text “Volkswagen originalteil”, which translates to “Volkswagen original part”, and just like any spare part, have an article number which happens to be 199 398 500 A.
They also produce an associated ketchup, with article number 199 398 500 B.
In order to reduce climate emissions, the sausage was replaced with vegetarian and vegan options at some of the company’s serving points, but this decision was later reversed.

8.33 million sausages
The return of the traditional option seems to have done the trick for sales.
In 2023, a whopping 8.33 million copies of the Volkswagen original part 199,398,500 A were sold, which is around 400,000 more than in the previous record year of 2022.
Already in 2019, production was around 7 million sausages, while it fell to around 6.5 million sausages during the pandemic years 2020 and 2021.
