Violence in Greece after police shot Roma boy

Violent protests erupted today in Greece’s second-largest city of Thessaloniki after police shot dead a Roma teenager. The boy is suspected of refueling his motorcycle without paying.

The 16-year-old boy’s condition is critical and he is being treated in hospital. The police officer who is suspected of having fired shots at the boy’s head has been arrested, the local police state.

During the unrest, Molotov cocktails have been thrown and shops have been destroyed. The police have responded with tear gas. Roma and human rights groups accuse the police of discrimination.
