The measure is something that several democratic mayors and governors demanded in order to take care of the increased number of asylum seekers in the country.
The process of granting work permits for new arrivals must also be accelerated. However, the promise does not apply to people who cross the border illegally and seek asylum, who by law must wait six months before they can get a work permit.
