Earlier in the day, Van Schip had won the opening part scratch, then finished sixth in the tempo race and fifth in the elimination race. That had given him the lead, but he was not involved in the final points race. Halfway through, Thomas, Consonni and Perrett, among others, had already taken a lap on Van Schip, who also barely collected points in the sprints.
