UTRECHT – Three people from Utrecht and one from Amsterdam have been arrested on suspicion of preparing and committing explosive attacks. Three of them were arrested in Germany, one from Utrecht was arrested in Tilburg.

Three suspects were arrested 375 kilometers from Utrecht, in Gießen, Germany. They drove a ‘very fast car’ with different number plates. Explosives used in explosives were found in the car. The fourth suspect was arrested at a company in Tilburg, which company was also searched.

No results without cooperation

“The amount of explosions in and around the border area requires constant attention,” the police said. The investigation into the explosive devices started at the end of last year and the police worked together with German colleagues in the case. “Without that collaboration, this result would not have been possible.”

One of the reasons that the police are fully committed to tackling explosives crackers is the danger. Both for the criminals themselves and for the environment. “In a robbery, ATMs are generally detonated. This often happens with explosives. This ranges from flash powder via heavy fireworks to professional explosives.” According to the police, the criminals often do not manage to loot, but the damage is enormous and the social impact is great.

The suspects are all still in custody. The Utrecht citizen who was arrested in Tilburg is in restriction, which means that he is cut off from the outside world and only has contact with his lawyer. That is why no more is known about the exact suspicions and the ages of the suspects.
