Urgent times for the Gävlesömerskan – despite the fact that many people shop for clothes online

– We have a lot to do right now, says Khatam Aboras, who runs one of Gävle’s sewing studios. And when we visit, one customer after another arrives wanting to have their clothes adjusted. According to Khatam, it is often about clothes that have been ordered online and need to be fixed to fit.

“Great idea”

One reason why there is so much to do at the moment is that proms, weddings and other celebrations are common at this time of year.

– I think it’s a great idea that we cook both at seamstresses and cobblers instead of buying new, says Gunilla Dahlstedt, who has just picked up a dress that has been fixed.

According to the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, every Swede bought an average of over 15 kilos of new clothes and textiles in 2023. This means a large increase compared to what we bought ten or twenty years ago. In addition, according to the same source, we threw away an average of 7 kilos of clothes last year.
