Unexpected criticism after Nils van der Poel’s historic victory in the Champions of Champions: “Never in our history…”

Nils van der Poel won this year’s “Champion of Champions”.
After a highly dramatic final on Sunday evening against Johan Wissman.
But now unexpected criticism is directed at the program after the historic record victory.

This year’s season of “The Master of Champions” has evoked strong reactions in several quarters. The Skating King Nils van der Poel has been the big favorite right from the start and showed off his big winning skull several times.

Paying homage to Adlerteg

Many have also praised the fantastic Jonna Adlerteg who really took up the fight against the other men. But the gymnast fell on the finish line and missed the final program by going out in the very last night duel, to the great anger and disappointment of the television viewers.

It therefore became van der Poel and the former athlete Johan Wissman which settled in the last final duel. It was a rousing end to the SVT program on Sunday evening when the final winner was to be decided.

Van der Poel won

Wissman took an early lead, but when it was decided in the last moment with dominoes, van der Poel proved to be the one who kept his cool and precision in check the best. Then the 27-year-old was fully deserved to lift the victory trophy.
– Fantastic experience with a very funny ending, thank you, says a proud Nils van der Poel in the program.
– Being beaten by Nils always feels okay, says runner-up Johan Wissman.

Van der Poel’s victory was also historic and record-breaking for the all-time Champions of Champions program. As he won more than half of all competitions during the course of the program, something that has never happened before in the program’s roughly 10-year history.
– Never in our history has anyone been so superior. Winning 13 out of 20 races. I’m actually at a loss for words, says the SVT presenter Mike Leijnegard in the program.
– Yes, sometimes you manage to live up to expectations, and this time it feels good. Very fun, right through, very fun, replies Nils van der Poel, who was the favorite to lift the trophy.

Criticism of SVT

At 27 years old, he also became the youngest winner in the program’s history. And precisely that reason has been a real talking point during the season when van der Poel so recently ended his sports career, compared to many other older and resigned participants.
– I would probably have won against Nils in all competitions, I think – twenty years ago, says the cross-country skier Jorgen Brinkwho was in the final program, with a laugh.

After Nils van der Poel’s impressive victory, the television viewers have also reacted with criticism that it was so unfair in this year’s season. Both in terms of the large age difference and injustice between the sexes.
“Impressive but they should have a time limit after an active career,” writes one user on Instagram.
“Too soon after finishing his career. At least 5 years after…”, writes another.
“Can think it’s crap because the program is about so much more than winning. So it will always be unfair,” writes a third.

Many would have liked to see Jonna Adlerteg in the final program, where instead it was four male athletes who settled for the final victory.
“It’s just a shame that these competitions favor the strength of the men. They don’t compete together in normal sports competitions. There should be one for women and one for men,” writes one user.
“Jonna impresses more. Nils has just finished his career. Of course he is talented, but SVT may have to take into account both gender and when you put your career on the shelf,” writes another.
“Wasn’t such an exciting season of MM with a participant who then recently ended his career,” writes a third.
