UN Secretary-General António Guterres describes the situation in the Middle East as “on the edge of the abyss”.
He appeals to Hamas to immediately and unconditionally release the hostages taken and to Israel to allow humanitarian aid to the residents of Gaza. The UN stands ready with food, water, fuel and medical equipment that can be delivered, he states in a statement.
“Water, electricity and other necessities are about to run out in Gaza,” says Guterres.
