Ukraine: Cyber ​​attack against Russian Defense Ministry

Cyber ​​specialists at Ukraine’s military intelligence service, HUR, are said to have managed to gain access to several documents from Russian servers. Something that made it possible for them to now access sensitive information about Russia – as well as map the structure of the country’s Ministry of Defense.

“The analysis of the received data also helped to identify the generals, other high-ranking heads of the structural units of the Ministry of Defense, as well as deputies, assistants, specialists,” writes HUR on Telegram, according to the Kyiv Post.

They add that they succeeded in identifying all the people, down to bureaucrat level, who used the digital document management. During the operation, HUR is said to have also gained access to various classified documents, including from Russia’s Deputy Defense Minister Timur Ivanov, writes the Kyiv Post.

The details of the attack are sparse – but HUR directs a sour “thank you” to Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu. They write that he “played an important role in the success of the cyber attack”.

Previous attacks

According to the intelligence service, the various reports and documents have circulated in over 2,000 units of the Russian Ministry of Defense.

“Work against Russian cyberspace with the aim of obstructing and paralyzing the activities of law enforcement agencies and officials of the aggressor state responsible for the war against the Ukrainian people continues,” writes HUR.

Ukrainian cyber experts have previously taken on cyber attacks against the Russian Ministry of Defense. On February 8, they allegedly carried out an attack that caused major problems for the country’s drone program. And on January 30, HUR stated that they attacked the communications server of the Ministry of Defense, Kyiv Post writes.
