Uefa banned Juventus from European games and fined 20 million euros as a result of financial irregularities – Chelsea was also punished

Uefa banned Juventus from European games and fined 20 million

Juventus, banned from Eurocourts in the upcoming season, would have been seen in the Conference League. The Italian big club has received punishments for their fouls before.

The European football confederation Uefa announced on Friday that it will exclude the Italian club Juventus from the Euro competitions in the football season starting in 2023-2024.

The reason for the bold action is found in the violation of UEFA FFP, i.e. Financial Fair Play rules. FFP is about the financial balance of football clubs and the transparency of operations. In practice, regulation has been aimed at curbing the unhealthy debt financing of clubs.

According to UEFA, Juventus had provided the umbrella organization with incomplete financial data for the years 2012–2019.

The international matches of Juventus, who finished seventh in Serie A last season, would have been found in the Conference League in an atypical way for a big club. Last season, Juventus lost ten points in the Italian Serie A as a result of abuses related to the club’s accounting. With the loss of points, the Torino team dropped from the Champions League standings all the way to the rightful place in the Conference League, which Uefa finally denied on Friday.

In addition to being banned from Eurokent, Juventus was ordered to pay a fine of 20 million euros. However, the Italian club only has to pay half of the fine if it manages to organize its finances in accordance with UEFA rules in the next three years.

In the Conference League, Juventus will probably be replaced by Fiorentina, who lost to English West Ham in the Conference League final last season. The Italian Football Federation still has to confirm the matter to UEFA.

In the same context, Uefa announced that it will also fine Chelsea, who plays in the English Premier League, 10 million euros for similar violations. Chelsea’s offenses also concern the years 2012-2019. Last season, Chelsea finished 12th in the Premier League, so the club was excluded from international matches due to their league ranking.

In May last year, Chelsea transferred the American businessman Todd Boehly led by the investor group, and the club’s reckless use of money has since received an extraordinary amount of attention.
