An altercation started at Great Lakes secondary school and extended to the Howard Watson Trail near Clearwater Arena on Tuesday around 11 am, Sarnia police said.

“The incident involved multiple individuals and included allegations of assaults with a weapon and physical assaults,” police said in a statement. “The victims of the assault sustained minor injuries.”

Two young people were arrested Tuesday in what was considered an isolated incident, police said.

Court records show a 17-year-old girl is facing youth charges of possessing weapons – a baton and a knife – for a dangerous purpose, assault causing bodily harm, assault with a weapon, and assault. There are two different complainants linked to the charges.

The second person, however, is 18 and facing adult charges. Her charges include assault with a weapon – a baton – and assault causing bodily harm, records show. The complainant is the 17-year-old girl who is also charged.

Both accused appeared separately in Sarnia bail court Wednesday and were released. Publication bans were ordered covering any evidence heard about the case along with the identity of all complainants and witnesses who are younger than 18.

The youth was released on $250 lease, but is banned from talking to three complainants, from all weapons but specifically knives unless she’s eating, and from going to Great Lakes secondary school. Her case will be next addressed in Sarnia youth court on Dec. 18.

The 18-year-old was released with no money tied to her lease. She’s also banned from talking to three people and from weapons, but she is permitted to be at the Murphy Road high school.

Sarnia police said the investigation is continuing and further information will be provided when it becomes available, but they also said it was considered an isolated incident with no ongoing risk to other students.

“We are working closely with the Sarnia Police Service, who are conducting a thorough investigation. As the matter remains under active investigation, we are unable to provide further comment at this time,” Caress Lee said by email.

Several parents posted on social media in response to Tuesday’s incident, with many commenting about the seriousness of the disturbance and the alleged weapons involved.
