Two suspects granted bail after ‘violent’ Sarnia home invasion arrested again

Two suspects granted bail after violent Sarnia home invasion arrested

Two of the three suspects granted bail following what Sarnia police called a violent home invasion are facing new charges alleging they broke the rules of their releases less than two weeks after leaving the Sarnia Jail.

Two of the three suspects granted lease following what Sarnia police called a violent home invasion are facing new charges alleging they broke the rules of their releases less than two weeks after leaving the Sarnia Jail.

But, after a brief stay back behind bars, they’ve both been released from custody again on fairly similar terms.

Sarnia police previously said their officers were called to a home in the 800 block of Devine Street, between Canterbury Court and Indian Road South, around 9 pm on June 14 after four men broke in, assaulted some occupants and made off with a bike and a TV. One occupant was taken to hospital by ambulance, treated and released, police added.

During one of the suspect’s bail hearings that wasn’t covered by a publication ban, the court heard the incident allegedly involved a vicious attack with a hammer that left a person with a brain bleed.

Despite calling it violent and arresting three suspects – the fourth still hasn’t been identified – police also said it was a targeted incident between people who knew each other and there were no public safety concerns.

Ronald Johnson and Kyle Johnson – 34-year-old twins – and Tyson Borden, 33, all of Sarnia, were charged with breaking and entering, robbery and assault causing bodily harm.

Borden was also charged with possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, police said.

The Johnsons spent a week in custody before being released June 21. Borden was granted bail a week later on June 27.

Borden and Ronald Johnson were arrested again last week amid new charges. Ronald Johnson is now facing an additional count of failing to comply with a release order by allegedly contacting Borden. Borden is facing two counts of the same charge, along with a third new charge of carrying a concealed weapon, allegedly a knife.

They both were released again Thursday on similar bail terms as were previously put in place. Ronald Johnson was let out on a $500 bail plan – double the amount from a few weeks ago – to his mother as a surety. He’s banned from contacting Borden and three people: Joshua Vanderwal, Brittany Gapp and Jessica Hales. He’s also barred from using weapons.

Borden’s bail, valued at $1,000, replaces his mother as a surety with his uncle. He has the same nightly curfew as before but now at his uncle’s Devine Street home – not far from where the alleged incident took place – between 11 pm and 6 am and a weapons ban. He also can’t contact the Johnson brothers or those other three people.

The Johnsons’ cases return to court later this month, while Borden’s won’t be back until September.

None of the charges laid June 14 or last week has yet been tested in court.

Borden has a prior conviction for assault in 2020 and was also jailed 30 days in 2014 for theft, weapon possession and two court-order violations.

While they say they haven’t identified the fourth suspect yet, police say the investigation continues.
