The circumstances are unclear, and neither the FBI nor the Justice Department have commented on the case.
Trump claims that he has cooperated with the relevant authorities and writes in a statement that he was not informed in advance about the search and that “the raid on my home was neither necessary nor appropriate”.
The Justice Department has been investigating boxes said to contain documents with classified information that were taken to Mar-a-Lago after the end of Trump’s presidency. Other investigations deal with people close to the ex-president who tried to invalidate the 2020 presidential election, as well as links to the storming of the Capitol on January 6, 2021.
Trump describes the search on his Truth Social network as an “attack by radical left-wing Democrats who desperately don’t want me to run for president in 2024.”
