Protesters led by trans women took to the streets of Ecuador’s South American capital Quito on Saturday to mark the 25th anniversary of the country’s decriminalization of homosexuality.

One of the main demands from the protesters is that the government should make it easier for LGBTQ people to find work and live in security.

– A quarter of a century after decriminalization, we still live under threat, especially we trans women, said Malony Chavez, representative of a transgender organization in the capital.

According to Chavez, not much has changed since decriminalization.

– We are still belittled by the police, abused by the police, raped by the police.

Some of the protesters held up placards with slogans such as: “Being trans should not mean a death sentence” and “Trans happiness is beautiful”.
