Togo is moving towards a redistribution of electoral constituencies, before the double legislative and regional elections that the Togolese executive wishes to organize before the end of the first quarter of 2024. The subject was discussed this week in the Council of Ministers and during a new meeting of the Permanent Consultation Framework, which brings together the majority and the opposition. The increase in the number of deputies seems to have been confirmed.

The mandate of the current deputies expires at the end of the month and we seem to be heading towards an increase in the number of deputies.

The government adopted, this week in the Council of Ministers, a modification of the law which fixes their number. There were 91 so far, but several solutions have been put forward for the distribution of seats. Discussions between majority and opposition parties continue within the permanent consultation framework, which met again this week.

The Ensemble alliance, for example, suggests one deputy per municipality, or 117 in total. The ANC, the party of Jean-Pierre Fabre, advocates for a distribution of seats based on demographics. A calculation system which would give more weight to the southern regions, considered closer to the opposition.

At the UFC, we hope that “ the electoral boundaries proposals are not an extension of the political quarrels between the parties “.« This is a subject that has always been debated in Togo. », explains researcher Bergès Mietté. For him, the electoral division is based on electoral criteria, and there are therefore currently strong disparities in terms of representativeness. Between the different proposals, it will be up to the government to decide. The final decision will be up to him.
