Star Trek captain and Tarantino favorite Chris Pine stepped into big shoes almost ten years ago when he took on the lead role in Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit. The film, directed by Poirot actor Kenneth Branagh, is on television today.

Agent Jack Ryan experiences this adventure in Shadow Recruit

The 2014 Jack Ryan film is not based on a novel by Tom Clancy, but an original screenplay by Adam Cozad and Jurassic Park author David Koepp.

Jack Ryan is working this time undercover for the CIA on Wall Street and becomes aware of the crooked dealings of the Russian oligarch Viktor Cherevin (Kenneth Branagh). Since they endanger the USA, he sets off for Moscow.

Shadow Recruit is the fifth film in the agent series, whose main actors have been changing for 33 years. Even with James Bond there is more staying power.

Shadow Recruit grossed the least of all the films and received poor reviews (via Metacritic). That’s why there was one Sequel with Chris Pine excluded. Instead, the franchise was reinvigorated in 2018 with the Prime Video series Jack Ryan, starring John Krasinski. There are now four seasons of this.
