INTERVIEW. At 28, Timothée Duperray, known as Tim Dup, unveils his fourth album, entitled “Les Immortelles”, this Friday, February 3, 2023.

A stripping, literally, as figuratively: Tim Dup publishes, this Friday, February 3, his new and fourth album baptized The immortals and carried by three singles, Love, If I really listened to myself And tears of the world. After its solar predecessor, The mad dash, released in June 2021, Timothée Duperray of his real name, relieved of the pressure of waiting, returns to a refined, intimate record. “This fourth album, it is different in so many ways and at the same time, in a line that continues to stretch. It is more personal, more exposed, it is more sung. I find that it is more readable, more minimal. It is more solitary too, because I made it alone in my studio”, underlines the artist.

In contrast to the eagerness of an industry that is always going faster, Tim Dup offers him an album to listen to, in full, from the first to the last song, focusing on his lyrics. “It’s not easy to find a place, when you have a record which, I think, requires listening”, recognizes the singer, who wanted, once again, “to go to the heart of the words and it is more refined, in the texts as in the music.”

“There is something between innocence and the savage.”

The immortals, title tribute to the “plural feminine”, has twelve pieces. Tim Dup evokes love, always, but also deeply intimate subjects, as on the song The club of 27in which he evokes the disappearance of his cousin, or universals with tears of the worlddisturbing and hypnotic summary of the climatic state of our planet.

“There is something between innocence and the savage. I like to put myself between two things. There is ingenuity, something a little primitive, to return to the essentials, to apprehend the musician and the singer that I am and not putting myself in boxes that are not mine. For that, it took a certain number of albums and time spent on the road. To know what I want to do , what I want to talk about”, observes Tim Dup.

Love

As a preview of Les Immortelles, Tip Dup had released the song Love and its clip in October 2022. A title that contrasted with the artist’s previous projects. “There is an instrumentalization that is a little different, something quite modern. It’s a song that I co-produced with Paco del Rosso, who works with Damso. There was something a little trendy. .. to break with a certain image.”

For the music videoLove, Tim Dup called on dancers from the Paris Opera. For him, it’s “the most staged clip, quite polished, aesthetic with dance at its heart, letting go, a relationship to my body and my face that’s a little different. All that to scar this image of a well-behaved boy from a good family.”

tears of the world

Still on the clip side, Tim Dup also called on the environmental activist Camille Etienne on that of the tears of the world. A song “born on the tour, by dint of seeing images of burning forests or skinny lions in cages”. “I had made a list of things I had seen and the melody came on the tour, I was listening to Pink Floyd and Satie, he recalls. -vis that. I think it’s too late. So, we have to do a little poetry by then.” A committed singer, Tim Dup nevertheless refuses this label.

“Today I feel like everyone else is. I write about things that affect me, but I don’t feel like I have big biases. It’s not not a militant record, but I play from the era. For me, these are primary, universalist values. There is an urgency to this text”, comments the artist about the tears of the world. In this context, the important thing for him is transmission.

“There is something that pleases me in this passing of the baton, which is closely linked to the consideration of tomorrow and environmental awareness. A transmission also, no doubt, as an artist: I don’t need to tell me that I leave a trace as an artist, of posterity, but I like the idea of making a work, which is built. And in this consideration, you think more in the long term about tomorrow, how you can have fun and think of a work that holds together, from disc to disc.”

Tim Dup and his desires elsewhere

If he really listened to himself, as his song says, Tim Dup would sail towards new horizons: living in the south of France and writing books. At 28, the singer has desires elsewhere, “to do something else. To write, differently, for example a literary or romantic object, I am fully into it. Another form of life. of life, settle down somewhere else. Live by the sea absolutely. And have silence. Behind the next tour, I would like to move away. I’m going to make records again of course, but I would like it not to be right away .” In summary, Tim Dup wants to “find some shade”, up to a fifth disc?
