Before 2000, director Danny Boyle and actor Ewan McGregor shot the three films Little Murders Among Friends, Trainspotting and Live Unusually Together. McGregor was also initially supposed to play the lead role in Boyle’s thriller The Beach, which airs on RTL II on Saturday evening.

However, the part ultimately went to Leonardo DiCaprio. That led to years of conflict between the director and his former regular star.

That’s what The Beach is about

During his stay in Bangkok, backpacker Richard (DiCaprio) learns about a remote island that has so far remained largely undiscovered by civilization. Richard goes to the idyllic spot on earth where a species is slowly… Hippie commune with more and more people arises. Of course, peace in paradise doesn’t last forever…

Ewan McGregor was mad at Danny Boyle over casting decision

According to Digital Spy, McGregor was first suggested at the time that he would land the lead role in The Beach. But DiCaprio was suddenly the bigger star (Titanic was released in 1997) and got the contract. Thereupon Boyle and McGregor did not speak to each other for ten years.

After the director’s Slumdog Millionaire success, the actor spoke very positively about Boyle in public. The moving speech (via IndieWire) moved the filmmaker to tears and led to reconciliation. The duo finally made their fourth film together with T2 Trainspotting, which was released in 2017.
