Three migrant boats are missing off the Canary Islands

Spanish coastguards are searching for three migrant boats off the Canary Islands that were reported missing by Spanish aid group Caminando Fronteras – a day after dozens of people were rescued from a migrant boat in the same area.

According to the coastguard, a rescue flight was used, but nothing was found.

The Coast Guard has also urged other vessels in the area to be on their guard.

On Monday, the Spanish coast guard announced that it had rescued 78 people from a migrant boat off the Canary Islands. According to previous information, it was believed that there were 86 people.

At least 559 people died at sea last year trying to reach the Spanish islands, according to the UN migration agency IOM. In 2021, at least 1,126 died, according to the IOM.
