After eight years without a cafeteria, staff at Brantford General Hospital beamed as they cut the ribbon last month to officially open Terrace Bistro.

The eatery, located in the D Wing, is offering breakfast and lunch options to hospital staff and visitors.

The re-opening of the cafeteria “supplements our existing retail food options,” said Erin Sleeth, vice president human resources at the Brant Community Healthcare System (BCHS). Tim Hortons has a full-menu eatery and a kiosk in the hospital.

Since the hospital cafeteria closed “due to financial pressures” around 2016, reopening it “was a priority identified through repeated staff surveys and feedback sessions,” said Joe Belancic, procurement and nutrition services director at BGHS.

“This feedback was brought forward to senior leadership who prioritized this project,” said Sleeth.

The cost of the project was about $196,000, including redesign of the old cafeteria, construction and equipment.

“The cafeteria operates on a cost recovery basis to meet staff and visitor needs,” said Chad DeBlock, chief financial officer.

Compass Group Canada prepares the food and Belancic said no additional BCHS staff were hired to operate the cafeteria. The menu includes bacon and egg breakfasts, bagels, grilled cheese, burgers and build-you-own bowls and wraps.
