Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was buried in Tokyo on Tuesday. Family and party colleagues attended the ceremony, but thousands gathered outside the Tokyo Temple for a final farewell.

Long queues of people, some of them festively dressed, came to the Zojoji Temple in Tokyo to honor Shinzo Abe during the funeral. Many waved, took pictures and shouted when a car procession rolled by with, among other things, the vehicle that drove his body from the temple.

Only the widow Akie Abe, other close family members, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and high-ranking officials of Abe’s conservative Liberal Democratic Party attended the ceremony in the temple.

The murder suspect has been arrested and has stated that he “harbored resentment” against an organization that he thought Abe had connections to.
