Attal unveils the 2023 results – LExpress

Greenhouse gas emissions fell by 5.8% in France in 2023 compared to 2022, a figure better than expected, announced Gabriel Attal, Wednesday May 22, during a meeting in Mayenne, estimating having “lessons to learn from anyone” in ecological matters.

“We have received the final figures for CO2 emissions in 2023 from Citepa (an organization specializing in these emissions, Editor’s note). They have actually fallen in France by 5.8%,” said the Prime Minister.

This decline comes after a decline of 2.7% over the whole of 2022. In March, Citepa estimated the decline in 2023 at 4.8% based on preliminary data. “We have no lessons to learn from anyone in terms of ecological and environmental efficiency,” added Gabriel Attal, while the majority list is followed by that of the Socialist Party led by Raphaël Glucksmann.

A target of 50% by 2030

France intends to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 50% (-55% net) by 2030 to comply with European commitments, which implies considerably increasing the rate of reductions. By 2050, it aims for carbon neutrality.

Faced with the government’s satisfaction, environmental NGOs judge that these declines are above all cyclical (mild winter, economic slowdown, etc.).

Some of them are taking the State to court in a procedure nicknamed “the Case of the Century” to force it to make up for the delay accumulated over the period 2015-2018.
