Thomas Wassberg’s unexpected words to the great talent Edvin Anger – now reveals the coup: “Hard to say no”

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

Edvin Anger is one of Sweden’s truly great skiing talents.
Now the icon Thomas Wassberg reveals how he managed to persuade the 20-year-old.
– It is difficult to say no to Wassberg, says Anger to SportExpressen.

Last year really has Edwin Anger had his big breakthrough in the skiing world. The young Swede has impressed greatly in the sprint at the World Cup and was seen as an interesting contender for the medals in the 2023 World Ski Championships in Planica.

Anger’s revenge

But the championship in Slovenia was a big disappointment for the 20-year-old who did not manage to live up to expectations at all and went home early after weak efforts. Last weekend then came the big revenge when Anger was part of the Swedish team that won the mixed relay at the World Cup in Falun.

The ski resort at Lugnet in Falun can also be called home ground for Anger, who grew up in Hedemora, just a few miles away. But despite the love of home, the Swedish great talent has left Hedemora and has been competing for Åsarna IK in Jämtland since 2000.

The coup of the icon

The classic association that has fostered big names such as Thomas Wassberg, Torgny Mogren, Johan Olsson and Ida Ingemarsdotter. And these days the teammates are called William Poromaa and Jens Burman.
– Åsarna is a club I enjoy and think I fit in well. But I will always be a boy from Hedemora. That’s how I’m recognized. Then I go for Åsarna and it’s only because I feel good, says Anger in an interview with SportExpressen.

It was precisely the icon Wassberg who lured Anger to Jämtland with a signing coup three years ago. At the time, the Olympic gold medalist was the top player in Åsarna IK and saw the great potential in Edvin Anger.
– I was chairman of the club at the time, so it was natural. There were others who were familiar with the parents, so there was a small connection there, Wassberg admits to the evening newspaper.

Wassberg’s tip

Anger reveals that Wassberg and William’s father Larry Poromaa came to Dalarna to meet the skiing promise and have dinner with him.
– That was probably a big reason. It’s hard to say no when Wassberg comes, Edvin says in the interview and also tells the tip he got from Thomas Wassberg.
– Train hard and don’t get a girlfriend was probably the tip.

The 20-year-old has not been able to keep the latter, as he recently went out and talked openly about his new love affair – from Norway(!).
