It sounds like a fever dream: In 2011, as part of their Funny Movies series, ProSieben published a parody of Twilight – Bis(s) zum Morgengrauen, in which Elyas M’Barek was part of a dying vampire dynasty with Hello Kitty backpack ends up in an American high school and sings his way from one absurd situation to the next together with badly operated class bitches, rich snobs and his lovesick vampire brother.

Well, Bite the Big Break – The High School Vampire Grusical is a real film that failed the critics. The mixture of fantasy, rom-com and teen comedy has an IMDb rating of 3.9, the Moviepilot community rates the film at 4.2 and therefore better than the “real” Twilight (4.1).

But even if the “Grusical” (what a word!) sounds like unbearable trash – the film is better than you think. And can currently Subscribe to Joyn+ * be streamed.

That’s what Bite the Big Break is about: The High School Vampire Grusical starring Elyas M’Barek

The distribution of roles in the Wolfensteins’ creepy castle has been clear for centuries: Father Vladimor (Karl Kranzkowski) makes the announcements, Günni (Elyas M’Barek) gets the blood on and Edwin (Lars Steinhöfel) is the loser who prefers to write songs for his online Girlfriend writes than go manhunt. When suddenly vampire hunter Abraham van Hellbring Jr. the Third (Francis Fulton-Smith) appears with wooden pegs and a holy water bombthe Wolfensteins have only one choice: they must get out of Transylvania.

Now the fate of the last living vampires hangs on Loser Edwin. Because he is the only one who has contact with the outside world and can find a hiding place: the basement of his internet friend Fella Cionetta (Jessica Richter), whose mother Laura (Gabi Decker), who is enthusiastic about her esotericism, lives in sunny Florida and looks completely different in real life than in their photos.

Here the Wolfensteins have to hide as best they can, Günni and Edwin even go to the local high school. But the situation escalates and it seems only a matter of time before van Hellbring picks up their trail.

As a reminder, this is the (also pretty silly) template for the parody, Twilight

Twilight – Bite at Dawn – Trailer (German)

ProSieben’s Twilight parody is entertaining trash with a big highlight

The effects aren’t good, most of the pop-culture references are mercilessly outdated 12 years later, and neither the gender roles nor the language of the film are particularly progressive and sensitive. In contrast to other comedies of its time, however, Bite for the Big Break has surprisingly progressive enemy images: Anti-science, religious fundamentalism and white surpremacy in the supposedly free USA.

At its best, however, the Twilight hoax shows the dysfunctional vampire family trying to settle into their new surroundings: the vegan hippie household of the Cionetta family. Above all vampire father Vladimor, in view of forced yoga sessions, the problems of his late puberty sons and the general lack of virgin blood increasingly resigned and developed a wonderfully dry gallows humor.

Nothing for haters of musicals: there is a lot of singing in the bite to the big break with Elyas M’Barek

In a particularly beautiful scene, he watches a horror film with his son Edwin (by the way, a film from the same parody series: ProSieben FunnyMovie: H3 – Halloween Horror Hostel). As the camera records the serial killer’s bloody torture tools, Vladimor sighs: “I always get such an appetite from these cooking shows.” Then, depressed, he slurps blood through you Straw stuck in a dead guinea pig. A scene that you could also imagine in the best vampire comedy of all time: 5 rooms kitchen coffin.

Moviepilot user blacky04 sums it up in her review of the film: “Of course is [der Film] Bullshit, of course most jokes are flat and predictable. But at safe intervals there were scenes that were just fun.”

Or in other words: bite the big break – The High School Vampire Grusical might be trash, but still a better love story than twilight.
