Anyone who has been waiting for news about Sherlock Holmes 3 in recent years must now be the most cynical person on earth. Following the departure of lead actor Robert Downey Jr. from the time-wasting MCU, fans found hope. The star should finally have time for the long-awaited sequel. Then part 3 of the detective blockbuster was pushed back to 2020, then to 2021.
It’s already the year 2022 and we can say this much: Sherlock Holmes 3 will not be in theaters this year. But there is hope.
Filming for Sherlock Holmes 3 is set to begin soon
One Take News reports that filming is about to begin Sherlock Holmes 3 is slated to launch in late 2022. A theatrical release in 2024 is possible. The source is not one of the established industry journals, but was recently correct with some reports. In a later update, however, the site had to correct itself: the start of production had been postponed to an unknown date.
So what else can we take away from this message? What speaks for an early start of shooting?

Most recently, new director Dexter Fletcher (Rocketman) explained why the brief upswing around Holmes 3 suddenly abated again:
The pandemic has [Sherlock Holmes 3] thrown off course. I do think it will be done. It just has to be done. I don’t know the exact timeline for that, but it should happen. The rhythm disturbances in the film industry caused by the pandemic are gradually leveling out. And now we also have a rough schedule. The actors are still missing. These are primarily Robert Downey Jr. as Holmes and Jude Law as Watson. Downey Jr. is making his blockbuster comeback outside of Marvel next year with the Nolan film Oppenheimer and could reserve his roster for the British detective after that. Jude Law, on the other hand, was long blocked by his role as Dumbledore in Fantastic Beasts. The future of the franchise is in the stars.

That means: If someone at Studio Warner takes heart now, the breakthrough should finally succeed and this great franchise to be awakened from its coma. Let’s hope that’s the case and that another year of empty promises doesn’t pass.
