The “worst” Brad Pitt movie he hated himself

Challenging filming circumstances are nothing new to Brad Pitt. For example, three of his biggest hate films can be found on Netflix and Amazon Prime. Compared to the horror shoot of Familiar Enemy, though, it was a mellow experience. There the star stood in front of the camera with Harrison Ford. Pitt described the thriller as the worst movie I’ve ever done.

Brad Pitt’s frustration with set horror erupts in a violent outburst of anger

Filming the thriller about an IRA terrorist (Pitt) and his unsuspecting American host (Ford) was difficult from the start. According to a report in the New York Times, filming began without a finished script. Ego fights, cost explosions and delays ran through the entire production period. And finally Pitt had had enough.

Towards the end of filming, he revealed to Newsweek:

We didn’t have a script. Well, we had a great script, but it got thrown out for some reason. We had to invent something during the shoot. What a pressure! It was the most irresponsible film shoot I’ve ever seen.

According to Pitt, the studio’s ruthlessness was largely to blame:

I could not believe it. I don’t know why anyone went ahead with the film at all. The film fell victim to a dying studio boss [Sony-Chef Mark Canton]who said, ‘I don’t care what you guys have. Just shoot something.’ […] Then when I wanted to get out, he said, ‘Okay, but this is going to cost you $63 million.'”

This public outburst was not without consequences, as Pitt confessed to Rolling Stone a few weeks later:

[Danach] All of a sudden the calls came in, ‘Will be on Entertainment Tonight,’ begging them. ‘Say you didn’t mean it.’ But I couldn’t. I said it. […] It was the worst movie I’ve ever been to.

According to Rolling Stone, Pitt finally agreed to send a clarifying statement to Newsweek. His frustrated rant has been haunting the ether ever since.

Actually looking quite happy: Ford and Pitt in Familiar Enemy

Whether she actually harmed the film is hard to gauge: Critical echo (via Rotten Tomatoes) and box office returns (via The Numbers) were lukewarm. Possibly the most disappointing consequence of such a painful shoot.
