The world of gaming screens moving towards 480 Hz

Two major computer panel suppliers, AU Optionics (AUO) and LG, have in their boxes a new generation of computer panels with a refresh rate of no less than 480 Hz.

While the fastest panels already display at 360 Hz, this 30% speed gain could give esports competitors another advantage, especially in shooters and other ultra-fast FPS games, where this genre frequency make sense.

In an AUO YouTube video spotted by Central TFTthe Taiwanese group, which is one of the heavyweights in panel production, is presenting a 16-inch Full HD panel clocked at 480 Hz and intended for the portable PC market.

Unlike the inauguration of the first 360 Hz panels at CES 2020, where the screens presented were all external devices, this time the panel is available in desktop and laptop versions. A sign of the growing importance of laptops in gaming.

Speed at the cost of definition

always according to center TFT, a site specializing in information on screen slabs, LG would also have a 480 Hz screen. But in any case, these slabs specifically targeting gamers are Full HD slabs. Because to be able to drive a screen at this speed, electronics engineers have to sacrifice image density in favor of display speed.

The question being whether this is a problem with driving the screen at this frequency – technical limitation or cost of components? – or is it related to the current performance of graphics chips. Which GPU is able to handle Fortnite in 4K at 480 fps? (spoiler: none)

In any case, the video presentation of such a panel by AUO informs us that the technology is ready on their side… but not necessarily the products. AUO and LG being technology providers here, we now have to wait and see if the designers of end products find it relevant.

The first elements of an answer could arrive either at Computex in Taipei at the end of the month, or at CES next January 2023, these shows being privileged places for this kind of announcement.
