After Netflix in November with 1899 released the new mystery series by dark team Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar, the streaming service has them a month and a half later already dismissed. The series about an emigrant ship that sets sail, only to take a completely different narrative direction shortly thereafter, will never achieve its goal after the season 1 cliffhanger. The anger and sadness about it are great.

Since 1899 was actually designed for 3 squadrons, many questions about the resolution remain unanswered. Even if the key to understanding the series has already been hinted at by Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese. After Netflix radically discontinued 22 series in 2022, this is the next setback for the subscribers of the streaming service.

Dear Netflix, I know from personal experience how it feels when a series is canceled after a cliffhanger. So trust me when I say: To withdraw in 1899 runs the wish of the public […] against. Keep the cinema magic alive and extend 1899.

1899 didn’t make it into the top 10 of the 2022 series because, as an international series, it had to compete against better-known English formats. As a “non-English language” series, 1899 would have landed in the top 10. For example, Elite Season 5 had 130 million hours of viewing time after 28 days, compared to around 240 million hours in 1899.
What the public outcry can achieve is unfortunately questionable. Or can you remember cases where Netflix would have reconsidered a cancellation? Or in which Netflix did not continue the series from another station, but someone would have saved a Netflix series?
