The Swedish stars’ great anger over the Russian skier’s controversial image – Linn Svahn’s harsh criticism: “Beyond humanity”

Russian skier Veronika Stepanova continues to provoke.
Her actions are now being criticized by the Swedish cross-country stars.
– It’s really crazy, says Edvin Anger to Sportbladet.

Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the presence or absence of Russian athletes in international competitions has been debated. So far, the answer has mostly been no, but that looks set to change this summer.

Svahn’s criticism

The International Olympic Committee has opened the door for Russian and Belarusian citizens to compete in the Olympics in Paris in the summer of 2024. The athletes will compete under a neutral flag, and the requirement is that they have not actively supported the war.

This season, Russian and Belarusian nationals are not allowed in the World Cup or Tour de Ski in cross-country skiing. But nothing has been communicated from the FIS about next season, including the ski WC in Trondheim.
– I expect FIS to make a different decision than what the IOC has done, so we just have to wait and see. But it’s not a decision I can stand behind, says Linen Weakness to Sportbladet.

Anger’s anger

The Russian cross-country skier Veronika Stepanova recently posted a picture on Instagram. There she poses next to a picture of the President of Russia Vladimir Putin. In the text of the post, she praises the pro-Russian former skiers Jelena Get well and Alexander Legkovas well as Putin, and writes that she will not be silent.
– It is quite beyond my… My view of humanity and what one should stand for, says Linn Svahn.

Also Edwin Anger criticizes the matter.
– It’s really crazy. It is quite inconceivable that they do. When they still give themselves an opportunity to come back and then they show support for the one who actually controls the war. Then it just shows me that they really shouldn’t be involved, says Anger to the evening newspaper.
