the specter of personal power

the specter of personal power

While we regularly talk about the crisis that French democracy is going through today, history may have something to teach us. How have we moved from one Republic to another for more than two centuries? With Nicolas Roussellier, historian, author of the book that has become a classic “The force to govern. The executive power in France, 19th-20th centuries” (Gallimard), La Loupe delves into the history of the French republics.

Charlotte Baris : If you clicked on this episode numbered 2/4, it is because you have surely already listened to the first podcast of this series, on the history of the republican regime in France. Episode 1 was therefore devoted to the First Republic, just after the French Revolution, and its fall when Napoleon Bonaparte took power.

The historian Nicolas Roussellier unfolds this story for us. Yesterday, he presented us with index cards, on which he noted all the moments that interest us. He is back in the studio with those concerning the Second Republic. Hello Nicolas !

Nicolas Roussellier : Hello Charlotte!

Charlotte Baris : So we stopped in 1804. I have a little sheet to quickly summarize what happens once Napoleon becomes emperor. His “Empire” endured before collapsing in 1815, especially after the defeat at Waterloo. France is therefore reconnecting with the monarchy: and the term Restoration should remind our listeners of something. At the head of the country, we find Louis XVIII then Charles X and finally Louis-Philippe. I stop here. Nicolas Roussellier, are you ready for what’s next?

Nicolas Roussellier : Ready !

Charlotte Baris : So let’s go !
