The Social Democrats’ proposal – establishment freeze for new for-profit independent schools

The initiative on the establishment freeze will be presented to the education committee and is proposed to apply until it is possible to legislate a total ban on profit in Swedish schools, according to Andersson.

– The idea is that it should be able to apply until you have a profit ban in place.

She also says that the market school is a broken system and that school and profit hunting do not go together. But also that the school groups grow at the expense of others.

The Social Democrats’ education policy spokesperson, Åsa Westerlund, also says that there is an uncontrolled expansion of for-profit schools in Sweden and that the school groups are a driving factor for this.

It is not clear whether the initiative for an establishment freeze will receive any support. And a proposal for a profit ban is something S has put forward before but for which there is a lack of support in the Riksdag.

SVT is looking for education minister Lotta Edholm (L) for a comment.
