Scientists in the United States may have found an answer to the question why people get gray hair. The results of a new study also give hope of being able to counteract the phenomenon soon. – This means a potential way to prevent graying of hair, says Doctor Qi Sun, who is behind the study. A research team from the University of New York has conducted a study that shows that there is a chance that gray hair can be prevented, reports the BBC. The American researchers also state that they may have discovered why hair turns gray when people age. There are many theories as to why hair turns gray. Various studies have shown that genetic predisposition, DNA, stress and diet can have an impact. Stem cells become worse at their job The new study, which was carried out in mice, focused on the pigment-producing cells “melanocytes”. Melanocytes are found, among other things, in the hair follicles and disintegrate continuously in the body. At the same time, new melanocytes are constantly being made in the body thanks to stem cells. The researchers have chosen to focus on precisely these stem cells, which are now believed to be behind gray hair. As the body ages, the stem cells become worse at their job, the study states. – Our study contributes to our fundamental understanding of how melanocyte stem cells work to color hair, says the study’s leading researcher Dr. Qi Sun. “One step closer” According to him, this could be a first step to being able to come up with a solution to the problem in the future. – This means a potential path towards preventing graying of hair, says the researcher. The channel has also spoken to Dr Leila Asfour from the British Dermatology Association, BAD, who says the hair color market is expected to reach $33.7 billion (about SEK 350 billion) by 2030. – The obvious implication of this research when it comes to the public is that it means that we are now one step closer to a way to reverse the graying, she says.
