the provisional results of the general elections still disputed by

While Angola paid tribute on Sunday August 28 to its former president José Eduardo dos Santos, the country is still awaiting the final results of the general elections on Wednesday August 24. According to the provisional results given Thursday by the National Electoral Commission, the People’s Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), led by outgoing President Joao Lourenço came out on top with just over 51% of the vote. Behind is the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (Unita), led by Adalberto Costa Junior with just over 44% of the vote. The national commemorations did not put a brake on the contestation of these provisional results.

With our special correspondent in Luanda, Gaelle Laleix

We are calm, we have our own vote count and know that we will get more deputies “, declares Adalberto Costa Junior, at the end of the funeral of José Eduardo dos Santos. Despite national commemorations, the leader of Unita does not lose sight of his objective.

Malfunctions

Since Friday, he has been challenging the provisional results published by the CNE. Saturday evening, five members of the Commission, which has sixteen, threatened not to validate the final results, due to malfunctions that have been pointed out. These members are the representatives of the opposition parties within the CNE.

Tensions

The contestation of the electoral results generated some tensions this weekend in certain districts of Luanda, such as Cacuaco or Sambizanga. However, tensions were quickly controlled. The tribute ceremonies to José Eduardo dos Santos have conveniently enabled the authorities to deploy a large-scale security device, particularly in the city center.

Civil society activists have reportedly been arrested according to the protesting civil society organization which is due to speak on this subject during the day.
