The police begin a criminal investigation after Maha’s death

Maha, the mother of three, died after plastic surgery at a newly opened private clinic in Malmö. Several serious deficiencies were discovered at the clinic, and now the police have decided to start a preliminary investigation into suspected crime.
– Basically, it’s about not being able to rule out crime in connection with the death, and we will look into that now, says Nils Norling, press spokesperson at the Malmö Police.

It was in March earlier this year that 49-year-old Maha died in connection with a stomach operation at the clinic in Malmö. During the operation, she suffered a cardiac arrest, and her life could not be saved. Exactly what caused the cardiac arrest is still unclear.

Maha had split stomach muscles, and turned to the clinic in question when she was denied help by public health care.

The police begin a preliminary investigation

After Maha’s death, several shortcomings have been reported. Among other things, the paramedics have established that she was not connected to a defibrillator when they arrived at the clinic. Even the cardiopulmonary resuscitation seemed to be inadequate, according to the paramedics.

In another deviation report, it is stated that the course of events raised questions about the quality of the post-operative monitoring.

On Wednesday, the police decided to open a preliminary investigation into causing another person’s death, which P4 Malmöhus was the first to report.

– The police initially conducted a death investigation, but yesterday they reclassified the case to causing the death of another. We have just started the work and are gathering information, says Nils Norling.

No suspect

In connection with Maha’s death, two reports were drawn up, one by her relatives and one by the healthcare system. The police then started an investigation into deaths without suspicion of crime, but since they could not rule out crime, they have therefore chosen to retitle the case.

Nils Norling emphasizes, however, that there are currently no suspects.

– We need more information before we can rule out or prove that crime is behind it, he says.

Maha’s brother: Feels great

Maha’s brother, Ayman Kadoura, hopes the new classification will provide answers to what happened to his sister that day in March.

– It feels great. It is important for us to know what happened to my sister. We also hope that it will lead to a law that controls private clinics and that sets requirements on how they manage the operations, what equipment they have and who does what, he says.

For family and relatives, it is important that what happened does not affect anyone else, he says.

– It is extremely important that this does not happen to anyone else. Our message to the public is to be careful with clinics like this.
