The Italian quadruple 100m relay team failed to reach the final. This means that Marcell Jacobs, who won EC gold in the 100 meters individually, chance of taking double sprint gold in the EC in Munich has gone up in smoke.
Jacobs is said to have rested before a possible final, so it was another quartet who got the chance. Lorenzo Patta, Hillary Wanderson Polanco Rijo, Matteo Melluzzo and Chituru Ali looked long to advance in time.
But a Turkish protest entered the picture. The Italians were judged to have hindered the Turkish team, who immediately launched a counter-protest.
However, the organizers ignored it and gave Turkey the chance to rerun its relay.
The Turkish quartet then ran to the finish line in 38.89 seconds and thus advanced to the final, just ahead of Italy.
