When it gets darker outside, more and more people light candles in the home. In a press release from Folksam, it can be read that half of all fire damage caused by candles between 2021 and 2022 occurred during the months of December and January.

– Our recommendation is to never leave candles unattended, and to always place lit candles at a safe distance from curtains and furnishings that can easily catch fire, writes Erik Arvidssoninjury prevention officer at Folksam in the press release.

45 percent of candle fires are due to location

45 percent of fires caused by candles occur because they are placed awkwardly, either so that they fall over or come close to flammable material, such as curtains.

Folksam presents a list of tips to prevent fire damage caused by light:

  • Always keep an eye on candles
  • Do not light candles in spaces where you are not
  • Place lit candles at a safe distance from curtains and furnishings that can easily catch fire
  • Never leave children or pets alone with candles
  • Make it a habit that the person who lights the candle also always turns it off
