On January 1, 2025, a new law regarding the recycling of textile waste will be introduced. The new law is introduced against the background of the high consumption of clothing and textiles.
“The government has decided to require separate collection of textile waste. This is a step towards a more circular handling of textiles in Sweden and means, among other things, that the municipalities must collect household textile waste separately”, the government has written on its homepage.
But the law has not gone unnoticed, it has attracted strong criticism.

Will the law hold?
Unfortunately, the law is difficult for the municipalities to follow because many lack the resources to take care of the textiles.
– We see a challenge in the lack of facilities and treatment methods. We would have liked to see a producer responsibility now come in connection with the collection requirement, says Little Yngvessondepartment manager for waste in Tjörn municipality, to SVT News.
But it is of no help to consumers because if you sort your clothes incorrectly, you can be fined.

The new law arouses strong reactions
News24 has asked what people think about the law in a post on Facebook. It then turned out that many are critical of the law. Many people are critical of what the law is supposed to do and others think that it seems good but difficult to maintain.
Here are some comments:
“Such a ridiculous law”
“Then where to throw them?”
“If you can’t throw it in a dumpster and you can’t ship it nearby, what do you do?”
“I don’t care. Rarely throw away clothes but if I do, they go in the trash. Period.”
“I honestly think people will screw it up”
“We property owners and tenants pay sufficiently high fees for waste disposal. Should we also have to go to the recycling center to sort properly is unreasonable”
