The media ombudsman’s boot against the gossip site: “Far below ethical standards”

The gossip site Stoppa pressarna published several articles last year in which it was stated that Prince Daniel is leaving Crown Princess Viktoria. The court denied the information and in an exclusive interview with SVT, Prince Daniel says that “it was a nasty, false rumor spread”.

“Invades people’s privacy”

Caspar Opitz, the public’s media ombudsman, reacts strongly to the way Stop the press works and believes that they go too far compared to the traditional gossip press.

– I have nothing against Stop the presses in general. I have something against bad journalism that unfairly hurts people and that’s what they do. They engage to a very large extent in going too close to personal integrity, intruding into people’s private lives in a way that is far below the ethical standard.

Daniel Nyhlén, responsible publisher at Stoppa pressarna, claims that what is published on the page is true and says that they remove articles regularly, in addition to those concerning Prince Daniel and Crown Princess Viktoria.

– We have removed a number of articles that for various reasons do not fit on the site. It may very well be that these three articles are removed with regard to the person who has reacted to them, he tells SVT.

Stands outside the press ethics system

Most of the media follow the press ethics system, which allows media to be reviewed and can be reported to the Media Ombudsman, but Stoppa pressarna is outside the system.

– When you, as a publicist, hear the media ombudsman and his representatives talk down to us for years and days and do something like Donald Trump, call our journalism “fake news”, then I think most people understand that you don’t want to join such an association , says Daniel Nyhlén.
