The internet loves the Baldur’s Gate 3 boss because he accepts gaming’s top award in a unique way

Last night the Game Awards were presented: Baldur’s Gate 3 was, as expected, Game of the Year and also won in five other categories. Chief developer Swen Vincke accepted the award in a very special way and the Internet is celebrating him for it.

In which categories did Baldur’s Gate 3 win? Baldur’s Gate 3 was nominated in a total of 8 categories at the Game Awards 2023. In two of them the game had to admit defeat to its competitor Alan Wake 2 and Final Fantasy XVI won the award for best soundtrack and music.

Nevertheless, the game won in a total of five categories and won the Player’s Voice Award on top. Baldur’s Gate 3 prevailed in these categories:

  • game of the year
  • Best Performance – for Neil Newbon as Astarion
  • Best community support
  • Best role-playing game
  • Best multiplayer game
  • Player’s Voice
  • In the podcast, MeinMMO editor-in-chief Leya Jankowski and her colleagues from GameStar Talk discuss why Baldur’s Gate 3 is so good.

How did Swen Vincke accept his awards? Game director Swen Vincke accepted the award together with three colleagues. In his speech, he called Baldur’s Gate 3 Larian’s Covid game and dedicated the award to all those who lost it during development – including Cinematic Animation Lead Jim Southworth, who died in November.

Unfortunately, Winke’s appearance was comparatively short. It was a similar story for several other winners, including Neil Newbon, who won the Best Performance award for his role as Astarion in Baldur’s Gate 3. During the introduction it was said that the winner could take as much time as he or she wanted to thank them. But then Newbon was played by the orchestra after just a few seconds.

MeinMMO editor-in-chief Leya Jankowski addresses this in her conclusion on the Game Awards 2023:

But it wasn’t Winke’s short speech that thrilled the Internet. It was much more the shiny plate armor with which he appeared on stage. You can watch the spectacle for yourself here:

In fact, Swen Vincke is known for his armor. He also usually includes them in developer updates. This was also the case in the legendary stream for which they were banned on TikTok in July. However, for the Golden Joystick Awards ceremony, he left the armor at home – which was a good idea, as he could hardly wear the six awards without the plate.

How did the internet react to Winke’s armor? On reddit, fans celebrate Swen Vincke for the epic outfit:

  • Anthony: This guy took his trophy in some damn armor! I love it
  • AscendedViking7: This is Swen Vincke for you. Next to Hidetaka Miyazaki, the best game director in the world.
  • Negativeedge_: Swen is a walking legend. He’s such a crazy guy.
  • GoatyyZ: Damn legend rolled over 25+10 with this armor.
  • There was also a lot of support for the legend of a chief developer on X.com (formerly Twitter):

  • @Nevoc_ (X.com): Swen Vincke just sits in the audience in full knight’s armor, such a hero 😀
  • @SwampyXx (X.com): Swen Vincke in some damn armor at #TheGameAwards this man is a legend
  • @VulonNight (X.com): Swen Vincke showing up in armor at #TheGameAwards is simply iconic. Oh, to be recognized with your nerd friends/colleagues in a suit of polished plate armor for an impeccably executed feat of love.
