The whole football world held its breath after the nasty pictures from Germany.
Now harsh criticism and anger is being directed at Uefa after what happened during the football European Championship.
– We are as shocked as you are, says presenter Gabby Logan in the BBC.
The last matchday in Group A of European Championship in soccer was quite eventful on the field. Germany equalized late on against Switzerland to secure first place in the group stage and Hungary settled even later against Scotland to clinch third place which could lead to the playoffs.
Nasty pictures
But before that, the terrible thing happened that made the entire football world hold its breath. Hungarian player Barnabas Varga got into a duel with the Scottish goalkeeper and received a heavy blow to the head, he was then left lying motionless on the grass.

After a long time, Varga was carried out on a stretcher, covered by a large sheet that the medical staff held up to protect him. But by then all TV viewers had already seen both replays of the nasty bang and also close-ups of the Hungarian who appeared to be unconscious on the pitch.
The anger against Uefa
It has aroused great criticism and anger towards Uefa, which arranges everything and is responsible for what is sent out in the television broadcasts. The English BBC chose to go out and apologize to its viewers for the horrific images that were shown in the live broadcast.
– We are as shocked as you are that they showed the replay, said the presenter Gabby Logan in the BBC telecast.
– There is a policy around this type of incident after what happened to Christian Eriksen three years ago and we were very surprised that Uefa chose to show that replay. That’s why we cut to another angle as soon as we could.

Strong accusations are now being leveled at Uefa for their actions and that they breached their rules on what should be shown during traumatic events during football matches.
“Uefa has learned nothing from Eriksen three years ago. Zooming in on Varga right after it happened is quite shameless,” writes the journalist Alex Mitton on X.
“I think it’s completely crazy that Uefa chose to show the replay of the incident with Barnabas Varga in view of situations in previous tournaments,” the journalist also writes George Townsend on X.

Swedish TV viewers also got to see the nasty pictures of Varga and there SVT actively stepped in and stopped showing the recent pictures of the Hungarian.
– There are some images that we choose not to show now, which you could see if you followed the match live. There was a close-up of Barnabás Varga lying passed out. They were very nasty, because there you can see that he is really not conscious at the time, explains the host André Pops for Expressen.
