No agreement to end the crisis in Haiti has emerged from the negotiations that took place in Jamaica between Sunday and last Tuesday. About fifty political actors and Haitian civil society gathered in Kingston. CARICOM, the Caribbean community that initiated these meetings, must now send emissaries to Port-au-Prince. Haiti which, exactly 220 years ago, defeated the army sent by Napoleon, to quell the Haitian revolution, unleashed in 1791 and which had led to the abolition of slavery in 1793. In “ The Avengers of the New World: The Story of the Haitian Revolution Laurent Dubois recounts the events that marked the greatest slave revolt in world history. Published in 2004 in English (Harvard University Press), then in 2012 in French, we take advantage of the reissue of this reference work in pocket version by the publishing house Les Perséides (Atlantide collection) to welcome Laurent Dubois. Professor at the American University of Virginia and director of academic affairs for the Initiative for Democracy, he talks with Sylvie Noël.
