The coronation of the British King Charles III will be held in London on Saturday next week. A couple of thousand guests have been invited to the event.
Next week on Saturday in London, the king of Charles III around 2,000 guests attend the coronation.
They mainly consist of other royals, heads of state and public figures.
There are some unexpected names on the guest list, which has caused consternation in Britain.
China will be represented at the party by the vice president Han Zheng.
Han is remembered for his time at the helm of Hong Kong from 2018 to this spring, when the demonstrations demanding democracy in the special administrative region belonging to China were heavily defeated.
The massive protests were a result of Han’s proposed so-called extradition law, which was later rejected.
The law would have made it possible for a person suspected of a crime in Hong Kong to be extradited to mainland China for sentencing.
According to Politico magazine (you will switch to another service) Han’s participation in the coronation would anger British conservatives, who oppose China’s tough policies in Hong Kong.
In addition, the deputy leader of Northern Ireland’s Sinn Féin is attending the coronation Michelle O’Neill.
O’Neill was also attended by the Queen Elizabeth’s to the funeral, and his participation should therefore not come as a surprise.
However, it has a strong symbolic value, as Sinn Féin was the political wing of the violent Irish Republican Army opposing British rule during the Northern Ireland conflict.
