Michael Mann has brought us numerous action masterpieces in the past such as Heat and Collateral. German fans continue to wait patiently for his first movie in nine years, the racing biopic Ferrari. But most recently the director moved to the streaming service HBO Max, where he will stage the captivating opening episode of the thriller series Tokyo Vice in 2022.
The series was one of the biggest insider tips of the 2022 series year as it received little attention on the Starzplay streaming service. Since it closed last year, the fast-paced thriller highlight has no longer been available to stream and can only be purchased on DVD and Blu-ray. This will change in a few weeks: In February you can stream Tokyo Vice in the ARD media library.

In the Thriller series inspired by a true story Tokyo Vice follows journalist Jake (Ansel Elgort). Always in a suit and tie (and a small backpack on his back), he roams the neon-lit streets of Tokyo. It’s 1999 and Jake is the first American to be hired at a Japanese newspaper. But as a Gaijin (in German: foreigner) he is disapproved of and forced into a corrupt system.

Jake wants to do more than just write scripted police press releases. And so he follows investigator Hiroto Katagiri (Ken Watanabe) and stumbles straight into the world of organized crime. Between Yakuza clans, bill collectors, escorts and smoky nightclubs, Jake goes in search of the truth in a world that is completely foreign to him.
A special highlight of Tokyo Vice is the pilot episode, which was personally directed by producer Michael Mann and features his unmistakable style. With high speed, rapid tracking shots and nerve-wracking nervousness, Mann creates a 60-minute series thriller that no fan should miss.
Tokyo Vice on ARD: Season 2 of the thriller highlight is already certain
Anyone who has missed the series highlight Tokyo Vice can finally catch up in a few weeks. The first season is available in the ARD media library at the February 23, 2024 complete ready for retrieval. The eight episodes will be shown on TV on February 23rd and 24th on Erste.
You also don’t have to worry about the series not continuing after the eight exciting episodes. A second season is already finished and will start in the USA on February 8, 2024 on HBO Max. When and how season 2 will be shown in Germany has not yet been determined.
