Växjö Lakers won their fourth SM gold in eight years.
Then they were seriously sawn – for a mockery during the celebration.
– It is undignified, says the artist Pär Wiksten.
Växjö has become a major force to be reckoned with in Swedish ice hockey, and yesterday the club’s fourth SM gold of all time was secured. The fifth SM final was no more exciting than the fact that the Lakers could win 3-0, and thus the final was finished.
The great mockery(?)
Växjö has thus won four SM golds in the last eight years, and it wasn’t long before the celebrations began on the ice. But the team chose to celebrate in a somewhat unexpected way. When Växjö lifted the dent on the ice, the song “My hometown” with the band The Wannadies was played over the speakers in the arena.
The Wannadies are from Skellefteå and the song is usually played at Skellefteå AIK’s matches when there is a goal. Many supporters interpreted the whole thing as a given mockery of Skellefteå, but Växjö believed that it was about something else.
– It’s Robert Rosén’s song too, hence the song choice, says Växjö’s communications manager Carolina Toreson to Aftonbladet.

The rage
But one person who didn’t appreciate the song choice was the creator himself. Pär Wiksten is the singer of The Wannadies, and rages against Växjö’s election.
– It is quite undignified. It’s a bit cute if they have to sign a song because they don’t have one of their own. But if they do it on purpose, it is undignified, he says.
At the same time, he says that he is not surprised, and Wiksten at the same time sends a solid pass to Växjö.
– I thought “that can’t be true, they can’t play ‘My hometown’ the damn fools”. Pretty typical Växjö plastic. In the glitter of victory, it should still be that they have to do so.
