the G16 denounces a dictatorial drift and Rwandan interference

The Action Group of Civil Society Organizations for the Defense of the Constitution of March 30, 2016 (G16) draws the attention of Central Africans as well as the African and international community to the country’s dictatorial drift.

The new coalition of Central African civil society met on Friday July 14 to denounce the constitutional reform project of the supporters of President Faustin-Archange Touadéra which would allow him to run for a third term.

Joined by Nadia Ben Mahfoud, of the Africa editorial staff, Jean-François Akandji-Kombé, international coordinator of the G16, is worried about violations of public freedoms in the Central African Republic and the involvement of the Rwandan president, accusing Rwanda of wanting to finance the constitutional referendum.

In the context of a Central African Republic which finds itself squared off, where we want to block everything and where we threaten with death those who dare to speak out against the revision of the Constitution, you will understand that we are no longer in a State free. And we are concerned about Rwanda and especially its president who has decided to take up the cause of the Central African president in his endeavor to revise the Constitution. He even proposes – we have this information from a reliable source – finance the planned constitutional referendum. This type of interference against the Central African people is unacceptable and intolerable. But, in the same way that we will not accept international interference, in the same way or even less, we cannot accept it from a brother country – what is supposed to be a sister country, Rwanda – and who is supposed to be a brother people “.
