The first tests for Starfield are here – This is how Bethesda’s new mega role-playing game is doing

The first tests of Starfield are finally available and give an impression of what you can expect from the role-playing game. We at MeinMMO summarize.

Starfield is about to be released. Now, one day before the “Early Access” start on September 1st, with which owners of the Premium Edition can enter the space adventure early, the first tests for the sci-fi epic from Bethesda are out.

We at MeinMMO show you how the title is received by the critics and summarize the first votes:

Shortly:

  • The first tests of Starfield are available and show that the game is fun but also has problems.
  • Positive points are the faction quests, the larger colonies, the city of Neon, the scope of the game, the companions and the battles.
  • Negative points are bugs and glitches, old-fashioned design of the NPCs, boring entry, and the long walking distances
  • It’s fun, but has its problems

What do the testers say? The first tests are largely in agreement: Starfield is fun, but has its problems. In some corners, the role-playing game thrives on Bethesda’s strengths, in others it feels like Starfield tried to be too many things and then didn’t excel at everything.

In general, it’s increasingly said that you can like Starfield if you have to live with some compromises. Overall, however, the role-playing game does not come close to other Bethesda titles such as Skyrim or Fallout 4 and could not meet the sometimes very high expectations.

For example, GameStar’s Peter Bathge writes, “Starfield has gigantic ambitions and enough content to keep you entertained for weeks, but also an awful lot of wasted potential.”

How are the reviews? Starfield’s Metacritic score is just under an hour after the release of the first tests for the PC version at 89. The version for the Xbox Series X is currently an 87 (as of August 31, 2023, 7:00 p.m.)

However, it can be assumed that the average rating will fall somewhat. For example, our colleagues from GamePro gave it an 82 rating and GameStar an 81 rating.

Metacritic Score for Xbox Series X:

  • Game Rant: 100
  • Washington Post: 100
  • Dual Shockers: 90
  • GamePro 82
  • Game Spot: 75
  • Metacritic Score for PC

  • Forbes: 95
  • Jeux video: 85
  • VG247: 80
  • PC gamer 75
  • PCGamesN: 70

Starfield: Those are the strengths of role-playing

What is praised? The various testers rate the role-playing game’s faction quests positively. In addition, the larger colonies with many people can convince. The city of Neon in particular is praised for its atmosphere and design.

The scope of the game is also good. There are tons of quests, weapons and skills, and a well-implemented New Game +. The various companions often left a good impression.

There is also a plus point for the fights – thanks to the ingenious jetpack.

Starfield: Those are the weaknesses of the Bethesda game

Are there weaknesses? Definitely. It’s a Bethesda game and comes with some bugs and glitches. The design of the NPCs and their animations can also seem a bit old-fashioned.

In addition, the start should be a bit sluggish and sometimes even boring. This also applies to some too long walking distances that prolong the playing time. And the travel system is not ideally solved either, since you are very often dependent on fast travel and short cutscenes interrupt the gameplay.

    Per

  • Big colonies and cities like neon
  • faction quests
  • Jetpack Battles
  • Scope of weapons, skills and quests
  • against

  • NPC design and facial animations
  • bugs and glitches
  • Depends on fast travel system
  • slow start
  • One point of contention is the main story. While the tester from PCGamer called them creative and was surprised by some of the twists, the authors from GameStar and GamePro find them “dull” and rarely see an “original idea”.
